Rectangular Callout: Note how the stems are hollow  and goes all the way down to where the tubers are below the surface.
Rectangular Callout: An example of cutting the stem above the surface of the  water.   These have been cut at least 12 inches above the surface of the water. 
Rectangular Callout: All the leaves are getting brown on this  lotus.  As soon as the leaves start to disintegrate  the stems get brown and shriveled up.  When this happens it seals the air passage  way which connects to the tuber.   
Rectangular Callout: Not much explanation required for this picture.  “A very happy lotus!” 
Rectangular Callout: This stem has been cut below the surface of the water.  Note there was pressure coming up through the stem,  as soon as the pressure is out then the water will replace the air and rot the  tubers.
