(Pictured on the Left) Viviparous tropical water lilies reproduce their off spring in the center of their leaves. This leaf shows the beginning formation of a plantlet. |
(Pictured on the right) Here the leaf has almost decayed completely and the new plant has 5 new leaves. At this stage the plant will sink down to the bottom of the pond and will anchor itself in the soil. |
(Pictured on the left) Here the roots are exposed but the plant has not anchored itself to the soil yet. It will need to be planted and this is the perfect time since the roots need nutrients. Also note that the plant has developed a tuber and is showing a crown. |
(Pictured above) Here is an example of a different variety of viviparous water lily, note that the leaf decomposed before it sent out any roots. This shows that the viviparous water lilies may develop differently . Some viviparous water lilies will also produce tubers the way other tropical water lilies do. At this point in time there are only day blooming viviparous water lilies. I am sure that somewhere there is a hybridizer trying to develop one! |
